Sclerotherapy

If you feel self-conscious about thread veins on your legs, then you are not alone. Otherwise known as ‘telangiectasia’, these annoying, spidery veins affect over 50% of adults. From a health perspective they are rarely a cause for worry, however, if you are concerned with the cosmetic appearance of the veins then consider Micro Sclerotherapy.

About Micro Sclerotherapy

The appearance of your thread veins can be significantly improved with this straightforward, well-established procedure. Various alternative treatments are available, but this remains the most reliably successful of them all. Micro Sclerotherapy is less expensive, faster and more effective than laser treatment.

Call us today for a consultation. We will assess any thread veins you may have and advise whether Sclerotherapy is the most suitable treatment for you. This clinic offers a thorough assessment and diagnosis of your veins including a Doppler Assessment which will exclude any underlying problems. We will then provide you with your individual quotation and treatment plan.

What is Micro Sclerotherapy?

Micro Sclerotherapy is a safe, non-invasive process where thread veins on the legs are injected with a solution that is made up of hypertonic saline or sodium tetradecyl sulphate. This sterile substance inflames vein walls making them collapse, then over time they get reabsorbed by the body and fade away.

Does Micro Sclerotherapy hurt?

Micro Sclerotherapy presents with minimal pain. A slight stinging sensation will be felt but the procedure only produces mild discomfort. Generally, it is a gentle, superficial treatment and most patients do not require numbing.

How long does Micro Sclerotherapy take?

Most sclerotherapy sessions take between 30-60 minutes depending on the number of veins being injected.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For mild cases of spider veins, one-to-two sessions, spaced three-to-four weeks apart may be sufficient. However, most providers recommend a series of two-to-four treatments for optimal results.

What happens after treatment?

After your treatment, you should be able to do any daily activities as usual. Compression stockings are worn immediately after the treatment and worn for at least 7 days and nights. You will be advised to walk around and continue doing low-impact exercises such as walking to aid with healing and blood circulation. It is, however, recommended that you don’t do any strenuous exercises for around 3-5 days to allow the treated areas to heal. You will be asked to avoid direct sunlight as it can cause hyperpigmentation on the treated areas. You should also avoid hot baths and Jacuzzis to prevent dilating the veins.

For these reasons, many individuals opt to have sclerotherapy during the winter when the compression stockings and bruising can be better concealed.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Some minimal bruising, swelling, redness, and itching at the injection site are common after a sclerotherapy treatment. These effects gradually resolve on their own within two-three weeks.

Is Micro Sclerotherapy safe?

Micro Sclerotherapy is very safe and risks are minimal. Although all medical procedures do come with risks, those associated with Sclerotherapy are minor and extremely uncommon. Some temporary side effects include bruising, small sores at injection points and raised, red areas of swelling.

Less common and rare side effects can include blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. We don’t expect this to happen as the injections are very superficial for Microscleotherapy, but should you feel dizzy, have any difficulty breathing or have chest pains, you should seek immediate medical advice.
